There is a growing interest in using reclaimed components and recycled materials in the construction of buildings in order to reduce the environmental impact of construction.
The driving forces for this trend come both from planning authorities and from project teams where savings in costs can be achieved as well as the enhancement of reputations. However, there is currently little guidance to advise how this can best be achieved and how the key challenges can be overcome.
In contrast to conventional design methods and material specification for example, it is essential to source suitable materials and products before commencing detailed design, specification and tending.
This seminar will provide an overview of the main issues that need to be considered when designing and procuring a building incorporating a significant proportion of reused and recycled goods and materials. Key challenges such as the need for warranties, complexity of engineering and size and makeup of the project team and possible solutions will be explained.
Speakers will highlight lessons learned, describing a number of case studies from major refurbishments including BedZED, the Earth Centre and a new vicarage. These will demonstrate the benefits and challenges associated with using such methods and techniques in the design and delivery of projects.
Why you should attend
This seminar will be of particular interest to clients, designers, architects, engineers, contractors and specialist sub-contractors, building and quantity surveyors, planners and those implementing environmental policy, regulators and building inspectors.
Delegates will gain:
- an understanding of the technical issues relating to the reuse of components and materials
- awareness of the approach to procurement that should be taken when designing with & specifying reclaimed goods
- benefit from knowledge of lessons learned on projects that have used reclaimed goods
