Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE Amex: BKR), announced today that it has been awarded a 40-month, $3.5 million contract from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to deliver construction inspection services for the Freeport Bridge and Freeport Ramps Project in Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, and Westmoreland County, Pa.
The project will entail relocation and realignment of the existing bridge, realignment and reconstruction of approach bridges and ramps with adjoining roadways and other miscellaneous construction on PA 356 from the Allegheny River Bridge northeast to SR 2019 continuing to PA 128. The Freeport Bridge serves as a vital link to the Alle-Kiski Valley transportation corridor. This project will improve traffic to the town of Freeport, as well as traffic utilizing SR 356 and Freeport Road.
Baker will collaborate with PennDOT to achieve their initiative “to improve effectiveness and efficiency to Pennsylvania motorists” and their goal for “strategic planning to better utilize tax dollars and maintain quality intermodal transportation systems.” Baker has joined forces with two reputable firms: Maguire Group Inc. (Maguire) and Construction Consultant Services, Inc. (CCS). Baker has worked with these firms in the past, resulting in successful projects.
“Baker is enthusiastic and eager to be part of a team that would provide such a positive impact to this region,” said Tom Donatelli, P.E., operations manager. “We have worked on several similar projects, which make us well qualified for this work.” The project is expected to start in July 2010 and last for over three years.
