AECOM Awarded Largest Civil Engineering Contract in Canada

AECOM announced that it has won an approximately $4.1MM assignment with GO-Metrolinx, the public transportation agency that serves the Greater Toronto Area, for the Strachan Grade Separation project in Toronto, Canada. Under the contract, AECOM will provide detailed design, as well as serve as the engineer-of-record.

The proposed infrastructure, which is in the Georgetown Rail Corridor, will accommodate existing and future demands for the Metrolinx commuter rail service between downtown Toronto and Georgetown, and also provides for a new air-rail service between Union Station and Pearson Airport. The corridor includes the GO-owned Weston and Canadian Pacific Galt subdivisions, and is also used by CN and VIA Rail.

Georgetown Rail Corridor

“The Strachan Avenue Grade Separation is the cornerstone project of GO-Metrolinx’s ambitious Georgetown South expansion program, and is the largest civil engineering contract they have ever awarded,” said Bill Hjelholt, AECOM’s North America director of freight rail. “This win is a strong reflection of the value AECOM creates for GO-Metrolinx, and enables us to further demonstrate our leadership as they undertake a decade of unprecedented growth.”

The project will add five new tracks to the existing three-track corridor, including more than 20 switches to integrate traffic into the Union Station rail corridor. Being in a densely built urban environment, the Georgetown corridor will be lowered by 23 feet, while raising Strachan Road 10 feet onto a new grade separation. Utility conflicts that consist of a 10-foot diameter combined sewer, two sanitary forcemains, a 4x115 kV power ductbank, and a trunk natural gas main must all be resolved as part of the track lowering.

AECOM previously completed a $400,000 constructability study to examine construction staging alternatives for this project.
