An extensive range of pipe and fittings has been installed at Sheffield City Hall, as part of a large-scale refurbishment project.
A selection of Durapipe ABS pipework was installed during the £12.5 million refurbishment of one of the city’s most popular venues.
Originally built in 1932, the classical concert hall was in need of a complete overhaul. Sheffield City Venues, who manage the venue and is overseeing the project, arranged for a total upgrade including new lifts, seating, lighting and heating and ventilation systems, as it seeks to modernise the venue and improve its corporate appeal. In relation to the specification of pipework, Durapipe ABS in sizes ranging from 110mm to 20mm, was specified to meet the needs of the chilled water system, offering a cost effective solution for Sheffield City Venues.
The high performance thermoplastic pipework was selected for the speed of installation and cost saving benefits, as well as offering ease of handling on site for contractors NG Bailey.
A spokesperson for NG Bailey commented; “The lightweight construction of Durapipe ABS meant it was an easy system for us to manage on site. As it requires no hot work permits or heavy cutting equipment, ABS was selected because it is quicker and easier to install than comparable pipe work, which offered significant labour cost savings and resulted in a reduction in the overall installation cost. This was particularly important to Sheffield City Venues because whilst the hall is shut for refurbishment there is no revenue coming in, so the speed and cost of installation was a major consideration.”
The Durapipe ABS system also offered additional benefits to Sheffield City Venues, in terms of helping to reduce overall life-cycle costs. The durable material has exceptional impact strength, making it more resistant to damage and combined with its non-corrodible properties and resistance to limescale build-up, ABS can reduce the maintenance and replacement requirements of the pipe work over its lifetime. Durapipe ABS is manufactured in both millimetre and inch sizes and the high performance range can be used for a diverse range of applications, including water and sewerage treatment, air conditioning and refrigeration and food and beverage processing.
The 18 month development is due for completion in Autumn 2005, which will see the new-look city hall play host to some of the biggest names in music and comedy as well as providing modern facilities for regional, national and international conferences.
