US demand to reach $1.7 billion in 2014
Demand for tube and stick packaging is expected to reach $1.7 billion in 2014. Advances will be driven by increased production of cosmetics and toiletries, and pharmaceuticals. Advances in the dominant squeeze tube segment will slightly lag the overall industry based on the maturity of aluminum squeeze tubes. Gains will reflect production growth in the large cosmetic and toiletry, and pharmaceutical markets along with product differentiation and improved barrier properties in extruded plastic tubes. Good opportunities are anticipated for unit-of-use tubes, which offer accurate dosing of pharmaceuticals and serve as sample or promotional packaging for cosmetics and toiletries. In addition, the need to comply with airline security regulations regarding carry-on liquid and gel toiletries will boost gains for trial-sized squeeze tubes. Stick packs will register robust growth in food and pharmaceutical uses, driven by the emergence of new applications. Growth will also benefit from the tendency of consumers to make multiple purchases in different shades or to keep a lipstick or lip balm in a purse, pocket or desk. Opportunities in skin care applications will arise from heightened demand for anti-aging skin care products and sun care products, along with further introductions of skin care items for men. Tube and stick packaging demand in the pharmaceutical market is expected to increase in line with the overall average, with faster growth prevented by the relatively limited range of applications for squeeze tubes and competition from alternatives such as plastic dispensing bottles and unit dose pouches for hospital products. Above-average gains for extruded plastic tubes will be based on improving barrier performance and cost advantages over laminate tubes.
