Boyertown-based Apex Fabrication and Design announced today they were approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to fabricate various sign structures.
PennDot overlooks driver and vehicle services including the design and construction of transportation routes in the state of Pennsylvania. According to the quality control department at PennDOT, Apex was approved for "Monopipe" Sign Structures, Section 948 Steel Sign Structures, Publication 35, and Bulletin 15 for approved fabricators. This will allow Apex Fabrication to work on design, fabrication and installations of structures such as gantries entering turnpike interchanges and/or sign structures on public roads and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Jim Smith, Apex President said, "We are thrilled to be approved by PennDOT and will join in their mission to enhance the Pennsylvania transportation construction industry by delivering construction and fabrication services that exceed customer expectations."
It took Apex over one year to prepare the appropriate specifications in accordance with the approval requirements set forth by PennDOT. According to Apex management, they also had to be certified with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) before applying to PennDOT; this certification was achieved in mid 2009.
AISC certification will allow Apex to fabricate the requirements for simple steel bridges, standards for bridge and highway metal components, as well as standards for structural members and attachment components for building requirements.
