The solids separator platform at the North Putnam Wastewater Treatment Facility makes use of fiberglass handrails, ladder, walkways and beams. The wastewater treatment facility is situated in Hometown city, West Virginia and offers services to more than 11,000 residential and business customers. The fiberglass materials were economical and needed minimal maintenance when compared to conventional materials.
Applications of Fiberglass in the Treatment Facility
Fiberglass was selected instead of galvanized metal by the Putnam Facility due to reduced labor, corrosive environment, easy installation and low maintenance life cycle costs. The structure was fabricated by GEF using EXTREN fiberglass structural shapes, SAFRAIL handrail and DURADEK fiberglass grating.
The project spokesman, Ryan Wallenburg stated that it took around three and a half days for the platform to be installed by two individuals. In case galvanized steel was used, three people would have been needed to install it over a week and a half time period.
Skilled installers were able to handle physically individual pieces for assembly eliminating the requirement for heavy tools. This factor as well as the speed of erection was advantageous and economical for the community-owned and operated facility.
