New Energy Works Timberframers Receives Best Craftsmanship Award for Portland Project

New Energy Works Timberframers has earned the Green Builder Green Home of the Year award in the Best Craftsmanship category for The Vermont Street Project, a timber frame house sustainably constructed in Portland, Oregon.

The interior of The Vermont Street Project includes industrial salvaged Douglas fir timbers, reclaimed elm flooring, custom cabinetry crafted of reclaimed walnut, and more.

The project was selected by a judging panel from a pool of more than 60 homes located throughout the country for innovative design, efficiency, mechanicals, sustainability, sensitivity to local sourcing and utilization of green materials.

The project’s craftsmanship is extraordinary. The hand-finished flooring was made of reclaimed wood and the stainless steel sink in the kitchen was designed by a local artist. Its millwork, stairs, tables, countertops, doors and cabinetry were all hand made using several reclaimed wood species. The thermally efficient and durable building was developed by using sustainable finish and structural materials, and efficient and sophisticated mechanical systems.

The Vermont Street Project includes features such as a reclaimed oak and elm flooring, reclaimed Douglas fir timber frame, interior and cabinet doors made of reclaimed walnut, recycled redwood siding, strong FSC-certified wood framed windows, recycled cement and wood-made foundation blocks, structural insulated panels, rainwater collection system, solar hot water panels, photovoltaic panels, antique barn siding, highly efficient boiler, natural plaster wall coverings and much more.

The project also earned the 2011 Home of the Year from Fine Home Building. At present, it is working to obtain the LEED H Platinum certification. According to New Energy Works Timber Framers’ President, Jonathan Orpin, the project is an outcome of the company’s years of expertise in green construction and customized timber work.
