NCR declared that it has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for incorporating several green design and building features in its manufacturing plant located in Columbus, GA, North America, thus becoming the first ever company to receive the LEED certification for a retrofitted production plant in the US.
NCR has renovated its 25-year-old ruined battery production plant in the US, during 2009 in a short period of five months. The facility, currently manufactures DVD rental kiosks, retail self check-out machines and ATMs required for the North American market.
The 340,000 square-foot manufacturing facility incorporates a number of green energy features such as re-roofing by using materials having a solar reflective index (SRI) of 84 or more to cut down the energy consumption of the building by nearly 40%, and substituting nearly 78% of the existing electrical installations with EPA Energy Star-rated technology.
During the construction process, NCR recycled over 70% of the used interior construction products such as top ceilings, walls and doors. It diverted over 94% of the construction wastes from reaching land fills by recycling more than 500 tons of construction waste. It saved potable water by utilizing the water from an onsite pond for watering its landscape. NCR also replaced or re-furnished showers and bathrooms.
To encourage the use of alternative energy transportation, it made separate reservation in its parking lots for low-energy consuming vehicles and provided around 22 safe bicycle storage slots to motivate its employees to use cycle instead of car. To cut down transportation of materials from long distances and subsequent causing of pollution and to support the local economy, NCR purchased products such as paint, glass, and carpet, ceiling tiles and others from local producers located within a distance of 500 miles.
