Singapore Opens Man-Made Island To Tourists

The Singapore government has opened tourist access to a man-made landfill island. The island is unusual in that it is made entirely from garbage incinerator ash.

The entirely fabricated island is being touted as having a "rich natural environment" with the National Environment Agency saying, "Throughout the planning, design, and construction of the landfill island, and since it came into operation, painstaking efforts have been made to protect the island's ecosystem and preserve its rich natural environment and biodiversity." Visits to the area are being organised by groups such as The Nature Society of Singapore and the Sport Fishing Association of Singapore.

Located around five miles south of Singapore the location is known as the Semakau landfill.
